Your Nervous System Is Running The Show

Five rituals to bring a chronically activated nervous system back into safety — without bypassing the body.

Your Nervous System Is Running The Show

You can't out-think a dysregulated nervous system. You can journal, affirm, meditate and manifest, and still wake up at 3 a.m. with a racing heart because your body has not yet received the message that you are safe. The nervous system speaks the language of sensation, breath and rhythm — not logic.

Here are five practices I return to with clients again and again.

1. Long exhales. Make your exhale longer than your inhale for two full minutes. Four in, eight out. This is the single fastest way to signal the parasympathetic branch that the threat has passed.

2. Cold water on the face. A splash of cold water below the eyes activates the mammalian dive reflex and drops heart rate within seconds. Pair it with a slow exhale and you have a portable reset.

3. Weight and pressure. A weighted blanket, a firm hug, lying on the floor with a pillow on your chest — proprioceptive input tells the body where it ends and the world begins. That boundary is regulating.

4. Humming, sighing, gargling. The vagus nerve runs through the throat. Vibration there is direct stimulation. A few minutes of humming a low tone does more than ten minutes of trying to relax.

5. Bodywork. This is the one we forget. Touch from a trained, regulated practitioner can co-regulate your system in a way no app or supplement can replicate. We are wired to be soothed by other safe bodies. That is biology, not luxury.

Pick one. Practice it daily for two weeks. Notice what shifts.
