Why Chronic Pain Isn't In Your Head
Understanding the somatic, structural and lymphatic patterns behind pain that won't quit.

If you've been told your pain is stress, anxiety, or all in your head, I want to offer a different frame. Pain is always real. What we sometimes miss is where it is actually coming from.
Chronic pain rarely lives in the spot that hurts. The shoulder that won't release is often a downstream symptom of a locked diaphragm. The low back that aches is frequently the loudest voice in a quiet conversation between the psoas, the pelvic floor and an old injury you forgot about. The headaches behind the eyes can be a congested lymphatic system finally asking to be drained.
Three patterns I see again and again:
Somatic holding. The body stores unprocessed experience as muscular guarding. The tissue is doing exactly what it was asked to do — protect — long after the threat is gone. Releasing it requires a slow, safe touch, not a deeper elbow.
Structural compensation. One small restriction — a sprained ankle that healed crooked, a c-section scar that pulls — and the entire kinetic chain begins to compensate. The pain shows up three joints away from the original problem.
Lymphatic stagnation. Inflammation that has nowhere to drain settles into tissue and turns chronic. The pain feels deep, achy, immovable. Restore the flow and the pain begins to lift.
Integrative bodywork looks at all three at once. It listens to where the tissue actually wants to be touched, not where the protocol says to push. It treats you as a whole, intelligent, layered system — because that is what you are.
If something has been hurting for a long time, it is not your fault and it is not in your head. It is information. Your body is asking for a different kind of attention.
